The Four Philosophies of Mindfulness
Offered by Michele Chaban MSW/RSW (retired/retraite), PhD as part of the Practice at the Institute 2020 series.
Purpose of Purpose
Why are you here? How are you setting your intention for the day and for your life? Purpose is one of four philosophies that we use in the University of Toronto program to help guide us in our applications of mindfulness and mindfulness meditation. The philosophy of purpose is often known as teleology. This practice is intended to look at what is your purpose, and how it is that you make yourself purposeful, by using mindfulness and mindfulness meditation.

The Embodied Mind (Epistemology)
Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation as an epistemology is a way that we observe and examine our own consciousness. It's a practice of interoception. We take a deep dive within ourselves, to start to look at what's going on within our body's containment. It also is interoceptive in that I start to cultivate myself and then how is it that I put myself out into the world to be connected with you either whether it be virtually or in a room one day when we're allowed to meet?

The Study of Seeing (Phenomenology)
Phenomenology is the study of a phenomenon of something. It's a study of a philosophy of perspective taking. Instead of trying to define it, Michele Chaban will guide us through 3 different practices to explore it.

The Study of Being (Ontology)
Ontology is the study of being or beingness. Think of yourself as a human being and what that means. One of the colloquialisms that's quite popular is that Are you a human doing, or a human being? And that's really where this begins, can we shift out of what it is that we are known for as doing and start to think about the realm of what our pure beingness is?
